A SUCCESS STORY IN THE MAKING.

A week ago, I received a letter from John Eng, one of our Instant Cash Magnet members. John agreed that I could share some of our communications with our WebPro Times readers and I appreciate that. Thanks John.

John's first email read:

Hi Jane,

Since I last "spoke" to you, you said I had a 50:1 rotation ratio on my affiliate page.... I have also been marketing my own page in several ways... one includes an email example you sent me, which I turned into a web page... see: Ravertiser

I have not seen any response to my ad in regards to my StormPay or PayPal accounts... Am I not supposed to be seeing a return by now?

Regards
John

I get dozens of letters everyday from people who are not making money on the net and I try to respond to as many as I can.

Most of the letters are not serious. They generally come from people who...

1. Expect instant success
2. Don't want to put the required effort in.
3. Expect you as the program owner to do everything for them
4. Refuse to spend money advertising
5. Don't want to take time to learn how to market or run a business properly.

Basically all they want is someone to blame when the sales they expect don't coming waltzing in the door, before they run of to the next latest craze and then complain when that doesn't work for them.

Years ago we used to say this about websites. If you build it they will come.

We quickly learned 3 things...

1. They don't come, and
2. They don't care.
3. You have to work extremely hard to get them to your site.

John's letter was different and it captured my attention.

First the letter was not your usual angry "You ripped me off, I hate you and good riddance," letter.

Secondly, it said that "I have been marketing..." which told me here was someone who was actually trying to do something with the program he was involved in and not waiting for the skies to open up and rain manna.

Most importantly, John's letter contained a website that he had designed himself which took the benefits of the program he is involved in and laid them out on a web page. A lead-in page to the actual Instant Cash Magnet site.

http://www.members.shaw.ca/moretraffic/

I was impressed.

Here was someone who was definitely trying to make a success of the program he was involved in and had given it considerable time and thought. It wasn't working and he needed help.

Been There. Done That...

I understood the frustration John was feeling. When I first started out on the net, nothing I did worked and there were times I wanted to throw up my hands and quit or worse yet shoot the people who's programs I had signed up for, spent money on and was seeing no return. If there had been no one around to help, I probably would have quit.

John had the right approach. I wanted to find out more about what he was doing and how he was doing it, so I fired off a letter with some questions in it.

Hi John,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I need you to do four things...

  1. If you are not a member of the WebPro Times, our weekly ezine which discusses all kinds of marketing, please sign up here... http://webprotimes.com We just ran an article about what kind of information you need to provide someone if you want to know what you are doing and you may benefit from it. The information you sent to me about how you are advertising does not tell me what I need to know to help you. Please read my article.

  2. When did you purchase your affiliate membership in Instant Cash Magnet?

  3. Why did you purchase it?

  4. What is your experience on the net and what is your general business experience.

That's it. Get back to me with this.

Thanks
Jane

John got back to me on all accounts. Once again I was getting the message that this was one determined guy who was willing to take the bull by the horns and make it work.

At one point I asked John to analyze a successful website we had just sent out with 10 packages to sell that sold out overnight. I wanted him to see what was on the website that might account for these sales so he could ad some of the type of language to his site.

He got back to me and analyzed the site brilliantly with a real understanding of what was making it sell.

I asked him to think about incorporating some free give aways with the Instant Cash Magnet site that he was creating and he made the changes and sent them back.

The website he sent back to me was:

http://www.members.shaw.ca/moretraffic/

Both Phil and I took a look at this site and saw that John was on the right track. He had gone 90 percent of the way with his website. Now all he needed was some new language, a bit of restructuring of the site so it could be read easily by everyone in all browsers.

Although Phil usually charges a significant sum to create websites for people, he decided to create one for John, free of charge, so he could use what he liked from it - throw out what he didn't and hopefully develop a winning sales site by combining his own good judgement and some of Phil's wisdom and expertise.

The site Phil sent to John with this letter was:

Hi John

Great attempt on your website. You put a lot of effort in.

I normally charge $500 for a website critique but Jane was impressed with your willingness to do it yourself that she asked me to lend a hand. So here is a brief critique to help you start thinking in the right way.

I made some changes and I will explain why below...

Here is a site with the changes on it.

http://jpeadvertising.com/sites/john/

  1. Notice the added selling benefits are all on the left hand side. People read
left to right and placing benefits on both sides adds to confusion as you don't
    know where to look next.

  2. You will notice I added a pic of a smiling man. Most people buy products based
on an emotional response. Smiling faces makes them feel good and that's the
    emotion you want to target.

  3. Notice I added a banner at the top. People tend to respond to clear visual images. So we are giving them that along with a powerful statement.

  4. Notice I added a subheading under the banner. This is to qualify the statement
made in the banner and to give keywords for search engines to spider.

  5. I suggest using a white background as it is easier to read and always stick to
these fonts. Arial, Helvetica, Tahoma or Verdana as most computers have these as
standard fonts. This way what you put on your website will display right.

  6. You can copy what you like on this page and use it including the banner at the
    top.

  7. I also suggest you have a form on your page to capture the visitors name and email address by offering them other free bonuses in return for allowing you to send them some promotional material to help them in their marketing efforts. If you need help with this I can point you in the right direction and set it up for a small fee.

  8. Frame your ads around the wording on the site and see how you go. If you need
some places to advertise let me know.

John responded:

Hi Phil and Jane,

Thank you very much for your critique on my site efforts! I took a look at your suggestions and do like what I see, simplicity I guess is the key to getting the message across. I will take the HTML and make some adjustments to suit my needs and upload it very soon!!!

I understand how my current effort is a little busy looking. I appreciate the things that the both of you have done for me....As the saying goes " Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime"...

I will keep in touch!

Sincerely,
John

And the point is?....

Not everyone can make money on the net. But it goes without saying that those who really take the time to start learning their craft and try out things that have proven, over time, to work on the net are far more likely to succeed than most.

We intend to keep working with John once his website is completely ready by steering him to some good ways to get the site out on the net.

Will he become a millionaire over night? Not likely. Are we voting him the most likely to succeed. You bet!

John made a great start.

IMPORTANT: If you want to be successful on the internet. Really successful. Treat your time and effort investment as a business endeavor. Take time to learn all you can about copywriting, website design and marketing. Learn from those who are already successful and model your business on what they do. And be prepared to work hard. Very hard for at least the first 3-5 years.

Smart Tip of the Day

This weeks tip is provide by Larry Dotson

3 Sizzling Copywriting Secrets!
by Larry Dotson

Bond With Your Readers

1) Create a bond with your visitors by bringing up likes or dislikes you have in common with them in your ad copy. Just make sure you do your research. For example, you could say, "I hate it when you have to wait in line for a long time at the drive-through." Another example, "I really like it when I have extra money to spend."

Keep Your Reader's Attention

2) Use a lot of headlines and sub-headlines on your web site. This will hold people's attention and keep them at your web site longer. Sometimes people don't have time to read a whole sales letter. This will allow you to sell to people who are skimmers. Plus it will get the reader's full attention at the same time.

Convince Your Readers

3) Make your testimonials more powerful. You can have people include pictures, handwritten signatures and normal net contact information with each testimonial. Other ideas would be to have people produce an online audio sound bite or video clip of themselves, home or cell phone numbers, proof of their credibility or authority, etc.

The Continuing Saga of J and P - Now in audio...

This week you can either read the continuing saga of J and P or you can listen in on it instead. We just thought you'd like to hear the unique mix of J's raspy, loud, New York Accent and P's softer, more laid back approach... Either way turn up your speakers and have some fun with us today...

P?

Yes, J?

I would love to get a dozen letters a day from people like John. I am really enjoying working with him.

Yep, J. He has all the earmarks of making it on the net.

I wish, P that everyone did. It would make our life much easier.

Oh, I don't know, J. If you weren't out there trying to help people succeed, you would just have a lot of time on your hands and you would be bugging me to do some new fangled project or another.

P, I am always bugging you to do some sort of new fangled project anyway. As a matter of fact I was just thinking that you really haven't quite finished the showcase for Joe and Mable and we need to get the site set up for the new submitter and you haven't even started on the whatchamacallit thing you were talking about and...

J?

Yes P

don't start...
